About the Work

When Oral Care Products needed to transfer commercial manufacturing of Smileactives®—their established at-home teeth whitening system—they needed a partner who could absorb a complex operation without disrupting supply to the market. The challenge wasn't building something new; it was taking ownership of something proven and making it better.

Build by Boyd partnered with Oral Care Products to relocate full-scale mixing, filling, and labeling lines, optimize the transferred processes for greater efficiency, and take complete ownership of supply chain management for ongoing commercial production.

Process Development & Validation

The Smileactives® manufacturing transfer required relocating commercial-scale mixing, filling, and labeling lines from the Oral Care Products facility into Build by Boyd's operation. New wet labs were constructed for research and development, inspection, and testing, and all associated lab equipment was transferred alongside the production lines.

Throughout the relocation, Build by Boyd worked closely with the Oral Care Products team to identify and implement process improvements—optimizing the operation for greater efficiency before transitioning into full commercial production.

Manufacturing

With the transferred operation validated and optimized, Build by Boyd launched commercial manufacturing of the Smileactives® product line. Initial production campaigns were blended seamlessly with a pre-built inventory—ensuring continuity of supply throughout the transition with no disruption to the market.

At scale, the team pursued further process improvements: reconfiguring lot printing to reduce label waste, automating part transfer from the filling station to the labeling station to remove operator intervention, installing a new vibratory bowl to accommodate various cap configurations, and adding pneumatic cylinders to improve capping force and throughput. The result is a more efficient, more capable operation—and a team at Oral Care Products freed to focus on innovation and new product development.

Supply Chain Management

Smileactives® is manufactured with a proprietary formulation of chemicals and liquid media, requiring a careful, coordinated transfer of sourcing and procurement responsibilities alongside the manufacturing operation. Build by Boyd worked closely with Oral Care Products to assume full supply chain ownership without disrupting the raw materials pipeline.

Today, Build by Boyd manages demand forecasting, raw material procurement, and supplier relationships—including the qualification of alternate chemical suppliers and distributors to support Oral Care Products' ongoing business continuity requirements.
